Before you start - browse RideBase and download the ride(s) you want :) |
Download, install and configure Garmin Connect for your Android device, and link your Garmin device to it.
You'll probably need to connect your phone to your Garmin device with Bluetooth.
With the essential software in place, you can proceed.
Locate the downloaded file in your Android Device file manager app of choice. (Files, ES File Explorer, Cx File Explorer for example)
Click it.
You will be asked which app you want to open the file with. Choose "Connect". |
When Connect has opened the file it will ask you what type of ride/activity it is.
You'll probably want to select "Road Cycling" but it's up to you. |
Connect will then crunch your file and present you with a map summary.
Click "DONE", at the top right.
If you want immediately send this ride to your device, then click the blue "Send to device" symbol, in the same position that "DONE" was in the previous picture. |
Connect will then offer you the choice of known devices to send the ride to.
Make sure your Garmin device shows as "Connected" in this screen, then click your device.
And that's basically it. The sync, if your device is connected, is usually immediate, and your file is transferred.
See later in the guide for what to do on your Garmin if you're not sure.
If you want to send a different ride to your device, go to Connect's home page, and click "More..." (bottom right) |
Click "Training and Planning".... |
...then click "Courses" |
Touch the ride you want to send to your Garmin. It is not necessary to "star" them to do this - I just happened to have some rides starred! |
You'll be presented with a similar screen to the one shown about 4 steps above this. Click the blue "Send to device" icon, top-right.
Follow the instructions in the steps above to complete the upload to your Garmin.
You'll see "Download Complete" briefly at the top notification area of your Device, indicating successful transfer of the GPX.
(Pictures shown are from a Garmin Edge1000 - your device may look slightly diffrent but the procedure is the same) |
To ride that route - touch "Where To?" on your Garmin device... |
Touch "Saved" |
Touch "Courses" |
Touch the route you want to ride.
RideBase downloaded rides will appear with the prefix "RBxxx" where XXX is the ride reference number in Ridebase.
Check the confirmation email you received when you downlaoded the ride, if you are unsure.
Your RideBase GPX file also includes the cafes relevant to the ride. These will be displayed on the map page of your device.
[Ride Reference Number in confirmation email - subject and body] |
Click "Ride" :)
Your Garmin should ask you if you want to "Navigate to the beginning of the Course".
If you NEED to be guided to the absolute start of the route, choose the "Tick" (yes), else choose "X".

Note - if you choose the "navigate to start" option, and fail to pass the start point, your Garmin will nag you for the next 100 miles to "Make a U-Turn and go to the start" and you'll find it very difficult to enjoy your guided ride
If your Garmin's Navigation setup is right, as soon as you pick up the route at any point, the device will begin routing you from that position.
